The 3Okm long mountain valley "Klostertal" is the oldest and most important trafficjunction between thecounty Vorarlberg, in the far west and Tyrol and, consequently, to Vienna. Well known owing to the Arlberg railway, which was daringly built in 1884, and the Arlberg tunnel, the second longest road tunnel in the world (completed in 1978). The restful villages of Klösterle (l O7Om) and Wald (l000m) lie approx. 2km apart from eachother and from the centre of Bludenz and the Arlberg Massive, the world famous wintersportsdistrict, and theyform the border between the Bavarian and Alemanian cultural spheres and the European watershed. The narrowvalley base of the Klosteral, where all the villages are settled, is bordered on both sides by the splendidmountainrange of the precipitous Lechtal Alm and the Verwallmountains with their wooded heights, pastures andmountains for rambling and climbing at 2000-3000m above sealevel. Relaxing walks in the valley, mountain paths, varying from easy to very difficult, for ramblers and alpinists and leading to mountain lakes and peaks.
