AUSSERVILLGRATEN/SILLIAN - Oberpustertal - East Tyrol - mountain and skiing area

1286m. Ausservillgraten, population 1026, East Tyrol lies on the sunny, southern side of the Alps and to this day retainsits original Tyrolean character. Intensive, modernising developments have least affected this area resulting in a balancebetween the people and nature. The small farming communities lie in inexhaustible countryside. 1/3 of East Tyrol lies inthe "National Park Hohe Tauern". History and culture have left behind a love of customs and traditons still practised bythe friendly, local people. Ausservillgraten, a widely scattered farming comunity lies 5km from the larger Sillian (1000m, pop. 2000) in a romantic, unspoilt side valley of the Hochpustertal which leads to East Tyrol's capital Lienz (30km) andthen on to South Tyrol/Italy where the beautiful Dolomites begin (14km). This glorious mountain region attracts above allsports men and women, climbers, cyclists, hikers and families. Numerous marked walking trails lead through fields of rareflowers, silent woods, to streams, waterfalls, up to clear mountain lakes, sunny alpine pastures with shelters offering theirguests a hearty snack and bioproducts and where of course you can enjoy the breathtaking views as far as the Großglockner (3798m) and the Dolomites. Alpinists can chose from 1500 imposing peaks of 3000m altitude w. their glisteningglaciers. The national park Hohe Tauern, a mountain preservation area of extraordinary beauty, probably one of the mostbeautiful in the world offers a great variety of flora and fauna and is something no holiday maker should miss. Alsopopular in the region is the cycling path system (Giro d'Italia), mountain railways, panoramic alpine roads, culture roads, rafting, canyoning, family and children's programme. Skiing centre of Thurntaler, cable railway, lifts, 11 + 8km of downhill runs, skiing school, 100km of cross countryskiing track, horsedrawn carriages, winter hikes, iceskating. Further skiing centres: Dolomites (27 lifts up to 2407m), Lienz 30km.
